Tether is a stablecoin built on top of existing cryptocurrency infrastructure, like Ethereum tokens. A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency backed by an asset or other currency. In this case, Tether is backed by US dollars. i.e. TRC20 USDT

TRC20 USDT is a stablecoin that uses smart contracts to ensure that each TRC20 USDT is worth $1 USD. Unlike other stablecoins, TRC20 USDT does not rely on any third-party entity or central bank to maintain the value of its currency. Instead, the stability of TRC20 USDT relies on smart contracts that provide a transparent audit trail for the token’s value at all times.

The thing that supports Tether is the US Dollar. Tether has the same value as the US Dollar and will continue to have worth as long as US Dollars can be exchanged for them.
